Weighbridges are used for measuring the weight of vehicles and their loads. They ensure fair trade, compliance with transport regulations, and ensure the safety of the vehicle. There are different types of weighbridges and how they are installed.

  • Steel Weighbridges: These weighbridges are made of high-tensile steel, which makes them durable. It can be used for weighing heavy loads and is suitable for any type of environment. They are modular in design, which can be dismantled and transported easily from one place to another.
  • Concrete Weighbridges: Concrete weighbridges are permanent installations that use a platform made with reinforced concrete. Steel reinforcements are provided to give additional support, enhancing its load-bearing capacity.

Installation

Weighbridges can also be classified on the basis of their installation. The surface area, strength of soil, cost, and application determine the choice of weighbridges.

  • Surface Mounted: Surface-mounted weighbridges are installed above ground. They have ramps to help vehicles move smoothly into the platform. It is ideal in settings where there is enough space to install them. They are quite easy to install and require less maintenance. Such weighbridges are suited for applications in logistics, agriculture, and transportation.
  • Pit Mounted:  Pit-mounted weighbridges require civil work for laying the pit and foundation. The platform is on level with the ground and requires no ramp. It is ideal for sites where there is limited space. It is usually used in manufacturing and port sectors, mostly in urban locations.

Semi-Pit Weighbridges

Such weighbridges combine the characteristics of pit and pitless weighbridges. It is usually installed in mining and construction sites. They are preferred for saving space and easy maintenance.

Portable Weighbridges: Portable weighbridges can be easily transported from one place to another. It is made of steel and ideal for temporary projects, weighing trucks on the road, and for use in remote locations. They are capable of weighing individual axle weights and also gross weight.

Manned and Unmanned Weighbridges

Traditional weighbridges are operator-controlled, while unmanned weighbridges are automated. Unmanned uses RFID number plate detectors, fitted with vehicle alignment sensors, boom barriers, safety sensors, and real-time camera view.
